Our name comes from a powerful concept taught in Barbara Oakley's acclaimed Coursera course, Learning How to Learn — one of the most popular online courses ever created.
The course reveals that your brain operates in two complementary modes: focused thinking and diffuse thinking. Focused thinking is the intense, concentrated attention you use to work through familiar problems. Diffuse thinking is the relaxed, open state where your mind wanders freely — making unexpected connections and sparking creative breakthroughs.
Neither mode alone is enough. The magic happens when you alternate between both — diving deep into problems, then stepping back to let your subconscious weave new patterns. That rhythm of focus and release is how the best ideas emerge.
